Carlisle and Mary A. (Reynolds) Carlisle; married, January 15, 1857, to Mary Jane Goodson. Democrat. Lawyer; member of Kentucky state house of representatives, 1859-61; member of Kentucky state senate, 1866-71; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Kentucky, 1868; Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, 1871-75; U.S. Representative from Kentucky 6th District, 1877-90; resigned 1890; Speaker of the U.S. House, 1883-89; candidate for Democratic nomination for President, 1884; U.S. Senator from Kentucky, 1890-93; U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, 1893-97. Died in New York, New York County, N.Y., July 31, 1910. Interment at Linden Grove Cemetery. Carlisle County, Ky. is named for him.
