Surveyor and co-author with Peter Jefferson (Thomas Jefferson's father) of a famous early map titled "Map of the Most Inhabited part of Virginia, containing the whole province of Maryland with Part of Pensilvania, New Jersey and North Carolina." Upon his death, the young George Washington took command of Virginia's military forces. Died, of injuries received in a fall from his horse, near Cumberland, Allegany County, Md., May 31, 1754.
