Son of James Gillespie Birney and Mary Reed Birney; married 1816 to Agatha McDowell; uncle of Humphrey Marshall; father of James M. Birney; grandfather of Arthur Alexis Birney. Lawyer; studied law in the office of Alexander J. Dallas in Philadelphia; member of Kentucky state legislature, 1816-17; member of Alabama state legislature, 1819-20; candidate for Presidential Elector for Alabama, 1828; Liberty candidate for President of the United States, 1840, 1844; candidate for Governor of Michigan, 1843, 1845. Presbyterian. While traveling, the horse he was riding bucked; he fell, suffered severe injuries, and subsequently died, in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, N.J., November 25, 1857. Interment at Williamsburgh Cemetery.
