Edward Henry Harriman (1848-1909) — also known as E. H. Harriman — of Arden, Orange County, N.Y. Born in Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, N.Y., February 25, 1848. Father of William Averell Harriman. Republican. Delegate to Republican National Convention from New York, 1904. Railroad magnate; he controlled the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Illinois Central and other railroads. His battle with James J. Hill for control of the Northern Pacific caused an economic panic in 1901; but he modernized every line he owned, creating a fast, efficient system. Died in Arden, Orange County, N.Y., September 9, 1909. Interment at Arden Farm Graveyard.

Member, Loyal Legion. Received the Medal of Honor in 1896 for action at Chancellorsville, Va., May 3, 1863. Died in Walden, Orange County, N.Y., May 30, 1920. Interment at Wallkill Valley Cemetery.

General in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War; candidate for President of the United States, 1852. Died May 29, 1866. Interment at West Point Cemetery; statue erected 1874 at Scott Circle, Washington, D.C. Scott County, Iowa is named for him.
